fleetsave! if you have a moon send your fleet on a deploy mission from there. if not, send it from the planet to another planet or a debris field. it doesn't have to be one of yours. a deploy mission's destination cannot be seen by a phalanx. if sent from a moon it cannot be seen at all.
spend as much res that didn't fit on your ships. don't spend it on ships or defence unless the construction will take longer than the attack.
also, sometimes it is useful to contact the attacker. it can work to stop the attack.a few rules though:
don't whine
be friendly
make a joke of it
act as if you don't care that he's attacking.
let him know you have cleared off the planet.
this doesn't always work but it has worked many times for me when i was much lower ranked.
